Audemars Piguet introduced the Royal Oak at the Basel Fair in 1972. It had a radically new shape and was designed by master horologist Gérald Genta. It was named after the legendary oak tree in which Charles II of England hid from his enemies, the Roundheads.
The automatic Audemars Piguet caliber 2225 movement is rhodium-plated, with fausses cotes embellishment. It's constructed with 40 jewels, 280 components, and a shock absorbent mechanism. It includes a straight-line lever escapement, a mono-metallic balance with variable inertia blocks, and a self-compensating flat balance-spring. It has a 22K gold monobloc oscillating weight with ceramic ball bearings, and the bevels on the bridges are diamond graved. It has a stop balance for setting the time, and the balance wheel oscillates at 21,600 vph (3 Hz).
