Junghans Max Bill Chronoscope Ref. 27/4600.02 | 40 mm | Bauhaus Automatic Chronograph
Junghans Germany 1861
Bauhaus clarity with the presence of a mechanical chronograph.
The matte silver-plated dial organizes the chronograph and date with remarkable calm, preserving the clean geometry of Max Bill’s design. Its 40 mm case has a more substantial feel than the slimmer models in the collection, while the finely drawn graphics and leather strap keep it visually light and comfortable for everyday wear.
A successful chronograph must organize more information without sacrificing clarity. Here, Max Bill’s distinctive typography, disciplined spacing and precise proportions allow the timing function and date to become part of the design rather than additions to it.
The matte silver-plated dial feels calm and open, even with the mechanical complication beneath it. Junghans deliberately omits a running small-seconds display, preserving the particularly balanced symmetry that defines this reference.
We selected this reference because it demonstrates how a complication can serve a design without dominating it. It is an especially compelling choice for someone who appreciates the original Max Bill dial language but wants the involvement of an automatic mechanical movement, a useful elapsed-time function and a little more presence on the wrist.
This is the more substantial side of the Max Bill collection. It feels like a mechanical chronograph rather than an ultra-thin dress watch, sitting visibly at the edge of a cuff instead of disappearing beneath it. The pale dial and finely drawn graphics keep that presence visually light, while the leather strap preserves the collection’s relaxed, adaptable character.
Clear numerals and carefully measured spacing make the time immediately readable. The chronograph is ready when an elapsed interval needs to be measured, but it does not turn the dial into a conventional sports instrument. The result works naturally with everyday clothing, professional settings and more formal occasions.
This design does not have a continuously running small-seconds display. The long central seconds hand belongs to the chronograph and remains still until the timing function is started. That quiet, symmetrical dial is intentional and does not mean the watch has stopped.
